Expert Immigration Law Advice for UK Standard Visit visas

Apply for a UK Standard Visitor Visa

Apply for a UK Standard Visitor Visa

If you’re planning to visit the UK for leisure, business, study, or other purposes, you can apply for a UK Standard Visitor Visa. At Takeoff Immigration and Visa, we offer expert assistance in navigating the visa application process with the support of the best UK immigration solicitors.

Who Can Apply for a Standard Visitor Visa?

You can apply for a Standard Visitor Visa if you want to visit the UK for:

  • Leisure: Visiting the UK for a holiday or to see your family and friends.
  • Business: Attending a conference, meeting, or taking part in sports or creative events.
  • Study: You can study for up to 6 months on a Student Visitor Visa.
  • Other Reasons: For example, receiving private medical treatment or other permitted purposes.

The Standard Visitor Visa has replaced several visa categories, including:

  • Family Visitor Visa
  • General Visitor Visa
  • Child Visitor Visa
  • Business Visitor Visa (including visas for academics, doctors, and dentists)
  • Sports Visitor Visa
  • Entertainer Visitor Visa
  • Prospective Entrepreneur Visa
  • Private Medical Treatment Visitor Visa
  • Approved Destination Status (ADS) Visa
  • Student Visitor Visa

Study Visits with a Student Visitor Visa

You can apply for a Student Visitor Visa if you plan to study in the UK for up to 6 months. This includes short-term courses or participation in exchange programmes or educational visits if you are under 18. For extended studies, you will need to apply for a different visa type, such as the Student Visa (Tier 4).

Business Visits with a Standard Visitor Visa

You can apply for a Standard Visitor Visa if you’re visiting the UK for business-related activities, such as:

  • Attending a conference, meeting, or training in the UK.
  • Participating in a sports-related event.
  • Coming to the UK as an artist, entertainer, or musician to perform.
  • As an academic, conducting research or accompanying students on a study abroad programme.
  • Visiting as a doctor or dentist to take part in a clinical attachment or observer post.
  • Taking the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) test or Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).
  • Seeking funding to start, take over, join, or run a business in the UK.

What You Can and Can’t Do on a Standard Visitor Visa

You can:

  • Participate in any business-related activities mentioned in the Visitor Rules.
  • Study for up to 30 days (as long as this is not the main purpose of your visit).
  • Study for up to 6 months with a Student Visitor Visa.
  • Take part in an exchange programme or educational visit (if you’re under 18).
  • Convert a civil partnership into a marriage.

You can’t:

  • Do any paid or unpaid work.
  • Live in the UK for long periods of time through frequent visits.
  • Claim public funds.
  • Marry or register a civil partnership or give notice of marriage or civil partnership.

How Long Can You Stay?

You can typically stay in the UK for up to 6 months on a Standard Visitor Visa. However, you may be able to stay longer under specific conditions:

  • Up to 11 months if you’re coming for private medical treatment.
  • Up to 12 months if you’re an academic on sabbatical and conducting research (you, your spouse, or civil partner can stay for this extended period).

If you’re staying in the UK for longer than 6 months as an academic or for private medical treatment, you will need to apply for a biometric residence permit.

Visitors under the Approved Destination Status (ADS) Agreement can get a visit visa for up to 30 days.

Long-Term Visit Visas

If you can demonstrate that you need to visit the UK regularly over an extended period, you may be eligible for a long-term visit visa that lasts 2, 5, or 10 years. However, you can only stay in the UK for a maximum of 6 months on each visit.
